What it is

Adam’s take on the signed card to mystery box — a plot he had been performing for over two decades, buying more or less every gimmick on the market. His complaint was always the same: they were too thick, and they bulked out a pocket.

In Case of Emergency is a miniature fire alarm, and it is very thin. It drops into a pocket and you forget it is there until you need it. Any deck can be switched in about fifteen seconds, and it also takes billets, bills, and anything else that fits.

Four routines are taught, starting with one that uses no sleight of hand at all: a chosen card vanishes and turns up inside the box. The intermediate version has the spectator hold a torn corner while the card visibly leaves the deck, and the corners match when it is found. The full version is an ambitious-card routine you can take phases from, ending with their signed card inside. Two bonus routines follow — a signed bill that vanishes in a burst of flame, and billet switches for mentalism.

The teaching also covers the MCF in detail, and Cody Fisher contributed subtleties to it.

The storyline is the part that sells it in performance. What happens if a magician messes up a trick? Professionals, it turns out, carry one of these. And then: have you ever wanted to pull a fire alarm before?
